True Hearth by James Chisholm
True Hearth is a beginner’s guide to the practice of Asatru which, as the name would suggest, focuses on the practical side of things. It heavily focuses on rituals that have historical roots and contains suggestions for how to adapt these historical practices for the modern day. The first section covers spiritual principles of Asatru, while the rest of the book focuses on rituals for different settings and occasions.
Why Shouldn’t You Start with Primary Sources?
There is a debate within the Asatru community about whether or not beginners should start by focusing on primary sources (like the Eddas or Icelandic sagas). I do believe that the Norse myths should be one of the first things that all beginners look into, but overall I disagree with beginners being told to read primary sources only. While I believe that you should eventually read primary sources, I believe that beginners should start with more modern resources, for a couple of reasons.
